Cyclists, Bicyclists or Bikers?
As I was preparing to tell this story I began to wonder about the word for a person who rides a bike. I call myself a 'biker,' but once someone told me a biker is someone who rides a motorcycle. I began to research this and found this article.
Now I'm more confused than ever. What do you call it? Please comment at the bottom of the post.
Now for the story. This morning after taking their photo I passed two guys riding their bikes side by side on the River Promenade. I rang my bell, passed them and said, "Thank you." (They were going at a slow pace). One guy replied, "You're welcome," which is always nice to hear. Too many people are rude or look at you funny when you ring the bike bell to try to go around them.
I rode on to New York Street and then turned around, my usual route. I smiled at the two guys riding past in the opposite direction. Later I was riding through the Glick Peace Walk and there they were again, just ahead of me. I rang the bell and said, "Thank you again!" as I passed them. They laughed.
Then as I was waiting at the light on Delaware Street, they pulled up beside me. They asked me how far I ride and where? That led to a conversation about their bike rides and why I always carry my Nikon camera.
When I got home and looked at their photo, I realized it was the same two guys who were in a digital sketch I did a month ago! And not that it matters, but I think they were a gay couple. ;)
