General Henry Ware Lawton
When I was cycling through Garfield Park the other day, before winter returned!, I came across this statue of General Henry Ware Lawton. I since learned that he fought in the Civil War, receiving the Medal of Honor. He studied law at Harvard then fought in several other wars, including the Indian Wars, Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. He was killed during the Battle of Paye in 1899.
The statue was originally erected at the former Marion County Courthouse Square, but in 1917 it was moved to Garfield Park.
Lawton is the namesake of Lawton, OK, the Lawton neighborhood in Havana, Cuba and Lawton Street in San Franciso.
